Note to exporters
Information on various sources of statistics relating to the export of military goods and technology, including conventional arms and ammunition, can be found on the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development's Export Permits and Export Controls Web site.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) helps ensure that exporters and carriers comply with national policies, processes, procedures, regulations and legislation related to exporting commercial goods. Additionally, the CBSA helps maintain Canada’s trade reputation by ensuring that exports comply with international agreements and conventions signed by Canada.
Requirements for exporters
Most goods being exported from Canada must be reported. This is required by law under Part V of the Customs Act (Sections 95 to 97.2) and the Reporting of Exported Goods Regulations.
Requirements for carriers
Transportation companies, carriers and customs service providers must also present and submit additional documents, including conveyance reports, cargo reports and bills of lading. For details about these requirements, see Memorandum D3-1-8, Cargo – Export Movements.
Export Reporting Methods
You are encouraged to report the goods being exported using one of the following methods:
- Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED)
- G7 Electronic Data Interchange Export Reporting
- Summary Reporting
Important: In exceptional cases, where the use of CAED or G7 EDI is neither feasible nor practical, you can use form B13A. Completion instructions can be found on the instructions page of the B13A form itself.
Requirements of Other Government Departments
The CBSA helps administer legislative requirements of other government departments (OGDs) as they relate to exporting certain goods. The requirements will determine if your goods are restricted (i.e. controlled, prohibited, or regulated). As an exporter you are obligated to find out if the goods require an export permit, licence or certificate.
For a complete listing these other requirements, see: Memorandum D19, Acts and Regulations of Other Government Departments.
