Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 7, 2007 - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers in the Criminal Investigations Unit seized more than $400,000 worth of steroids from a home in Bridgewater. The investigation was a joint initiative with the Bridgewater Police Department.
“Thanks to the excellent work of the CBSA, thousands of single doses of this kind of illegal and very dangerous drug will not be distributed across our country,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. “Canada’s New Government is committed to ensuring that our law-enforcement agencies have the tools and resources to protect our communities and keep our streets drug-free,” he added.
A Bridgewater resident was charged yesterday with possessing, smuggling, trafficking and producing anabolic steroids under the Customs Act and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The Bridgewater Police Department laid additional charges.
CBSA officers found a room in the Bridgewater home that was being used primarily as a laboratory for making the various steroids. Additional seizures were made at the Halifax postal plant and from various courier shipments.
The raw hormone products used to produce the anabolic steroids were shipped from China under assumed names. The raw product was further processed to make various anabolic steroids, both in liquid and pill form. Additional drugs were also created to counteract the side effects of taking anabolic steroids.
The drugs were being sold across Canada and the United States on the Internet and on message boards under the name “Illusion Laboratories,” which has since shut down. As a result of this seizure, the CBSA is working with its partners in other parts of the country on related cases.
