Montréal, Quebec, October 1, 2009 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that it seized more than 12 million contraband cigarettes with an estimated street value of approximately CAN$1.5 million at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing.
CBSA officers intercepted the contraband tobacco on September 25, 2009, during an examination of a semi-trailer truck. The driver declared that his 40-foot semi-trailer truck was empty; however, upon further examination, CBSA officers found the contraband cigarettes sealed in plastic bags and contained within several boxes.
“I applaud the CBSA officers involved in this significant seizure of more than 12 million contraband cigarettes,” said the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety. “Seizures such as this are a clear sign that our efforts to prevent crime and keep illegal contraband off of our streets are working.”
The Customs Act stipulates that all goods entering Canada must be declared to the CBSA. Smuggling, untrue statements and other Customs Act violations may lead to prosecution in a court of law.
The CBSA's investigation continues.
