Customs brokers professional examination

To register for the Customs Brokers Professional Examination, first complete an Application for Customs Brokers Examination (Form L55) online and print it.

Your completed application package must include:

  • the completed form
  • a cheque for $200.00 payable to the Receiver General for Canada
  • at least 1 document to support your identity

Supporting identification (ID) documents must:

  • include your:
    • name
    • date of birth
    • photo
  • be:
    • valid (not expired)
    • issued by Canadian federal, provincial/territorial governments or equivalent abroad
    • clear and legible

You may send more than 1 valid piece of ID if you don't have a single document with all of the information listed above.

Examples:

  • military ID
  • driver's license issued by a province or territory or the equivalent abroad
  • non-driver's license issued by a province or territory
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • Canadian passport (current or expired within the last 6 months)
  • foreign passport that meets the requirements
  • ID card issued by the federal, provincial or territorial government
  • employee identification issued by the federal, provincial or territorial government
  • valid permanent resident card or a permanent resident card expired for less than 6 months
  • NEXUS card

After mailing your application package, please send us a confirmation email containing your first name, last name, complete address and a scan or picture of your ID document(s) to: brokers_licensing-agrement_des_courtiers@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca.

The application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. All participants will be required to submit a new application, including the registration fee and ID, for each scheduled examination.

Pending the location of all applications, the CBSA will conduct exams in at least one urban centre per region across Canada.

Candidates will be required to show valid photo ID upon arrival before the exam is administered.

The Customs Brokers Licensing Regulations require any person intending to transact business as a customs broker or a qualified officer be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

The CBSA's Memorandum D1-8-3, Canada Border Services Agency Customs Brokers Professional Examination contains a list of other D-memoranda with details of suggested (but not limited to) areas of knowledge to be tested, and are provided to assist individuals to prepare for the exams.

The CBSA does not provide training courses or study guides for individuals preparing to write the Canada Border Services Agency Customs Brokers Professional Examination; however, you may email the Canadian Society of Customs Brokers (CSCB) if you wish to take courses at courseinfo@cscb.ca.
